John M. Butler is a leading expert on forensic DNA profiling. He is a fellow at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Butler received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Butler has written several textbooks on forensic DNA typing covering all aspects of the underlying molecular genetic methods, the application to forensic casework and the biostatistical interpretation of results. He has also written widely on DNA research from "A Few Thoughts of a Believing Scientist" which analyzes the possibilities of DNA research applied to the Book of Mormon to multiple articles on polymerase chain reactions where he was the lead author.
